Straight Pins: Size is Everything

As part of my 'Tool Time' series on this blog, I'm excited to share my thoughts on one of my favorite sewing tools - straight pins. When it comes to using straight pins for sewing, size isn't always a critical factor. What's more important is that the pin can easily penetrate all the layers of fabric you're working with.

For standard sewing tasks, most people find that their go-to pin size works just fine. However, larger pins may not stay in place as well and could potentially prick your fingers - which is exactly what those handy cushions are meant to prevent.

It's also worth noting that when storing straight pins, it's essential to keep track of the type and size you're using. This can be challenging if the ends of the pins stick out from the cushion. I've definitely been guilty of forgetting that safety pins were originally designed for sewing - these days, they seem to be used for a wide range of purposes, from decorative to constructive.
